Air-Conditioning
Car air conditioning servicing at KAAR starts from $395, at both our Henderson and Avondale workshops. We handle both refrigerants — the older R134a and the newer R1234yf — at both sites, and we can replace any component in the system.
What we don’t do is cheap top-ups. That’s worth explaining, because it’s the difference between our price and the one advertised on a roadside sign.
We Don’t Do Top-Ups
An air conditioning system is sealed. Refrigerant isn’t consumed the way fuel or oil is — if a system is low, it’s low because it leaked. Putting more gas into it without addressing that gets you a cold car for a few weeks and puts you back in the same position next summer, having paid for refrigerant that’s now in the atmosphere.
Every job runs through our fully automatic air conditioning machine. That matters because the machine controls the process rather than leaving it to whoever is holding the hose:
- Full recovery of the existing refrigerant, measured — so we know exactly how much was still in there, which tells us straight away whether the system has been losing gas
- Deep evacuation to pull moisture and air out of the system
- Recharge to the manufacturer’s specified quantity, not an approximation
- UV dye added as part of every procedure
Moisture is the part most people never hear about. Water inside a system reacts with the refrigerant and oil to form acids that attack the compressor from the inside out. Proper evacuation is what prevents it, and it’s precisely the step a quick top-up skips.
What a Car Air Conditioning Service Includes
- Recovery and measurement of existing refrigerant
- Deep vacuum to remove moisture and air
- Recharge to manufacturer specification
- UV dye added for future leak tracing
- Performance test and vent temperature check
- Cabin filter check — often what’s actually behind poor airflow
Most services take around an hour and a half. The price varies with the vehicle and which refrigerant it takes.
How Often Should It Be Serviced?
Manufacturers generally recommend an air conditioning service at least every two years. The reason is simple: a typical system loses somewhere around 15 to 20 percent of its refrigerant a year through normal permeation, even with nothing wrong with it. Left long enough, the system runs low on both gas and the oil the gas carries, and the compressor is what pays for it.
It’s a serviceable item, the same as your engine oil or filters. Most people just never think of it that way until the day it blows warm.
Why We Put Dye in Every Regas
Because the next diagnosis is far quicker and cheaper if we do. If a system does go down again, the dye shows where it’s escaping under UV light rather than starting the investigation from scratch. It costs us very little and saves you a diagnostic charge later.
Finding Leaks Properly
Some leaks are obvious. Most aren’t — a slow weep at a hose fitting, or a pinhole in a condenser from road debris, can take a system from cold to useless across one summer without ever showing an obvious sign.
We have electronic leak detection equipment capable of picking up very small leaks, and we also carry out nitrogen pressure testing, where the system is pressurised with dry nitrogen and monitored for pressure loss. It’s the reliable way to confirm whether a system will actually hold before you spend money putting gas into it.
One thing we won’t do is use refrigerant to find a leak. Some workshops charge a system with gas purely to see where it escapes, which vents it straight into the atmosphere. Nitrogen does the same job without the environmental cost.
Both Refrigerants, at Both Workshops
Vehicles built from roughly the mid-2010s onward increasingly use R1234yf rather than R134a, as part of the international phase-down of high global-warming-potential gases — the rules behind that change are set out by the Environmental Protection Authority.
The two refrigerants are not interchangeable, and R1234yf requires separate equipment, which is why some workshops can only handle older vehicles. We’re set up for both at Henderson and Avondale, so it doesn’t matter which you drive or which site you visit.
Component Repairs
Where a system needs more than a service, we can replace any part of it — compressors, condensers, evaporators, receiver driers, expansion valves, hoses and seals. We diagnose what’s failed and quote it before any work is done.
Odours and Bad Smells
Bacteria, mould and fungi grow readily inside a car’s air conditioning system — it’s dark, and it’s damp. The result is the musty smell that hits you when you first switch it on, and it isn’t only unpleasant: it can cause eye and throat irritation, and it’s a genuine problem for anyone with allergies or bronchial trouble.
We offer a non-toxic deodorising treatment that cleans and disinfects the entire system rather than masking it. If your car smells when the fan comes on, that’s what it needs — usually alongside a fresh cabin filter.
Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
If you drive an EV or hybrid, your air conditioning is doing more than keeping you comfortable — the same circuit is used to cool the traction battery.
That makes it a component with a direct bearing on the most expensive part of your vehicle. Batteries degrade faster when they run hot, so a weak or undercharged air conditioning system in an EV isn’t just a comfort issue, it’s shortening the life of the pack. It’s a strong argument for keeping the service up to date rather than waiting for a hot day to notice something’s wrong.
Signs Your Car Air Conditioning Needs Attention
- Air that’s cool but not cold, or takes much longer to cool the cabin than it used to
- Weak airflow from the vents — often the cabin filter rather than the system itself
- A musty smell when you first switch it on
- Noise from the compressor when the air con engages
- Windscreen taking longer to demist than it should
That last one catches people out. Air conditioning dries the air, so it’s what clears your screen quickly on a cold damp morning. A weak system shows up in winter too.
Get It Sorted Before Summer
Every workshop in Auckland gets the same rush in the first properly hot week of the year, and that’s the worst possible time to find out your system needs a condenser. If yours wasn’t cold last summer, now is the time — you’ll get a booking when you want one, and the work gets done without the queue.
Book It With Your WOF or Service
Most of our air conditioning work is done alongside a WOF, a vehicle service or other repairs, which is the sensible way to handle it — the vehicle’s already with us, so it’s one trip instead of two. Mention it when you book. We also look after fleet and commercial vehicles, where air conditioning tends to get overlooked until it stops.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a car air conditioning service cost?
From $395, depending on the vehicle and which refrigerant it uses. That covers full recovery, deep evacuation, recharge to specification, dye, performance testing and a cabin filter check. Pricing correct as at September 2026.
How long does it take?
Around an hour and a half for most vehicles.
Why is it more expensive than a quick regas?
Because we don’t do top-ups. A system that’s low has leaked, and adding gas without finding out where puts you back in the same position next season. Our price includes the full manufacturer process and the diagnostic work that stops it recurring.
Do you handle R1234yf?
Yes, at both workshops. We’re equipped for both R1234yf and the older R134a.
My car air conditioning smells musty — what causes that?
Usually bacteria on a damp evaporator, or a cabin filter well past its life. We check the filter as part of the service and can advise on treating the system.
Can you replace a compressor or condenser?
Yes — we replace any air conditioning component, and we quote the work before starting it.
Do I need to run my air con in winter?
It’s worth running it periodically year-round. The refrigerant carries oil that keeps the compressor seals lubricated, and a system left unused for months is more likely to develop leaks.

Tip:
If the temperature inside your car does not feel as cool as it use to be, then your A/C system may need servicing. Our trained technicians will diagnose, service, repair and ensure your system is performing to its optimum.
The Air-Conditioning system in your car is a serviceable item. Just as you would change your engine oil, oil and air filters regularly, it is important you maintain your A/C system in the same manner.
Manufacturers report that the A/C system should be serviced at least once every two years to ensure it operates at maximum efficiency. Most vehicles will lose 15-20% of refrigerant per year on average. The condition of your system can deteriorate quickly if the correct servicing is not carried out.
We use a fully automatic air-conditioning machine to professionally service your system.
This carries out a full leak test, vacuums system, reclaims/recycles and adds new refrigerant, lubricant and ultraviolet dye to make leak detecting easier if needed in the future.
Finally, we carry out the leak and cooling temperature tests, system pressures and performance checks.
Note: if your air conditioning fails and refrigerant leaks it is not good for the environment, having your cars a/c maintained correctly is imperative, you can be assured we do not use refrigerant for leak detection our team has the training and equipment to carry out the process using nitrogen – Environmentally friendly!
Tip:
Air Conditioning acts as a dehumidifier during winter, also using it all year round helps to maintain the A/C system. Because refrigerant actually carries the oil that lubricates the compressor, it keeps seals and hoses moist which prevents them from drying out and cracking which leads to leaks.
Odours and Bad Smells
Bacteria, mould and Fungi can grow inside your cars air conditioning system resulting in bad smells and odours from the vents, also it can cause eye and throat irritations, bronchial infections, and allergic reactions.
Solution
We offer a non-toxic deodorizing treatment, which cleans and disinfects the entire A/C system. This will also result in a fresh, clean smelling car that will enhance your driving pleasure.
Do you have an electric or Hybrid vehicle?
Did you know that you’re a/c system cools the battery and prolongs the life, so to maximise the life of your vehicle it is recommended to have the Air-conditioning serviced.
