The Catch — and How We Handle It

Here’s the problem nobody warns people about. WINZ needs a quote before they’ll approve anything. But we can’t quote a repair until we know what’s actually wrong with the vehicle, and finding that out means a diagnosis — which costs money you may not have right now.

We can’t do that diagnosis for free. What we do instead:

If you can find the money for the check, we include that amount in the quotation — and if WINZ approves the quote, we refund it to you.

So the diagnostic cost isn’t lost. If the repair goes ahead, you get it back. It’s the fairest way we’ve found to get people past the step that otherwise blocks everything.

How the Payment Works

Once WINZ approves the repair, they’ll usually pay us directly by direct credit — you don’t need to find the money upfront and claim it back. We’ll do the work, invoice as agreed in the quote, and settle with them.

If your case manager needs anything specific on the quote — a reference number, itemised parts and labour, or it sent to a particular address — tell us when you book and we’ll set it out how they need it.

What We Can Quote For

Anything that makes the vehicle safe and usable. In practice most WINZ quotes we write are for the things that stop a car being legal or driveable:

• WOF failures — lights, suspension, brakes, tyres, the items on your check sheet
• Brakes, steering and suspension
• Cooling system faults and overheating
• Batteries, starting and charging problems
• Engine and transmission faults

We’ll also tell you honestly if a repair costs more than the vehicle is worth. That’s an uncomfortable conversation, but it’s better to have it before an application than after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WINZ help with car repairs?

They may. Car repairs are listed among the urgent and essential costs Work and Income can assist with, through a Special Needs Grant, an Advance Payment of Benefit or a Recoverable Assistance Payment. Eligibility is decided by WINZ based on your circumstances — we can’t approve or promise anything, but we can give you the quote they’ll ask for.

Do you charge for a WINZ quote?

The quote itself is part of the process. What isn’t free is the diagnosis needed to work out what’s wrong — but if you pay for that, it goes into the quotation and we refund it to you if WINZ approves the repair.

Does WINZ pay you directly?

Usually, yes — by direct credit once the application is approved, so you’re not out of pocket upfront.

How long does it take?

We can usually get a vehicle looked at and a quote written within a day or two of it coming in. How long WINZ takes to decide is up to them.

What if I’m not on a benefit?

A Recoverable Assistance Payment is available to some people who aren’t receiving a main benefit. It’s worth asking Work and Income about your situation. We also offer Afterpay if that suits you better.
