What is a DSG transmission, exactly?

DSG stands for Direct-Shift Gearbox — Volkswagen Group’s take on a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Instead of a torque converter, a DSG uses two separate clutch packs: one handling odd gears (1, 3, 5), the other handling even gears (2, 4, 6). While you’re driving in one gear, the next gear is already pre-selected and waiting on the other clutch, so the swap between them happens in milliseconds. That’s what gives a DSG its trademark quick, seamless shifts — closer to a manual gearbox’s directness than a traditional automatic’s feel.

How is a DSG different from a CVT or a conventional automatic?

These gearbox types solve the same problem — getting power from the engine to the wheels smoothly across a range of speeds — in completely different ways.
