BMW Service and Repairs

BMW servicing in Auckland usually comes down to one question: does the workshop actually know these cars, or is it taking the booking and hoping? We’ve been working on them from Henderson and Avondale since 1994, and there’s a BMW 3 Series in our own staff carpark.

If you drive one, you’ll know a BMW feels different from behind the wheel — and that’s exactly why people worry about servicing outside the dealership. We drive them ourselves, so we understand the hesitation. What settles it is documentation: provided the work meets manufacturer specification and is properly recorded, your factory warranty is unaffected, and your rights around parts and workmanship are covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act.

What we see most on BMW's

Worth saying up front that this reflects what’s parked in West Auckland as much as anything about the brand. A workshop notices what comes through its doors, and there are a lot of 3 Series on our roads.

Oil leaks

Far and away the most common thing we deal with. In our experience they start appearing from around 70,000km, and the 3 Series accounts for most of what we see — though again, that’s partly volume.

They’re rarely dramatic. A smell after a run, a mark on the driveway, a slow drop on the dipstick. Left alone they get worse and they get expensive, and oil finding its way onto the wrong components creates a second problem on top of the first.

VANOS faults

We’ve done a good number of these, and the first thing we check is the oil. VANOS is hydraulically operated and it depends entirely on the right oil at the right condition — most of the faults we see trace back to poor service history rather than a failed component.

From there it’s live data, then solenoid operation, then mechanical checks. In that order, because the cheap causes are the common ones and there’s no sense pulling something apart to find out what a scan tool would have told us.

Timing chains

We’ve replaced a number of noisy chains. The first sign is usually noise on start-up, and it’s the kind of thing owners get used to before they get concerned about it.

These jobs need model-specific tooling, which we hire in from the tool library rather than attempt without. That’s deliberate: we’d rather bring in the right equipment for a job we do a few times a year than improvise, and it means we can take on work that other independents turn away.

Battery registration and service reset

Fitting a battery to a modern BMW without registering it to the vehicle shortens the life of the new battery, because the charging system keeps working to the old one’s profile. We register batteries as a matter of course.

Service indicator resets are routine for us — we haven’t struck a BMW we couldn’t reset.

Coding and programming

Some coding work we handle ourselves, and some we put through a programming specialist we work with. Which way a job goes depends on the vehicle and what’s being asked for, and it’s not something we can answer accurately over the counter without knowing the detail.

So tell us what you’re after and we’ll find out before you commit to anything. Either way it gets done — you don’t need to go looking for someone else.

Parts

We only fit parts from suppliers with a proven quality record, or genuine. Most of our aftermarket parts come through BM Workshop and All Euro, and we go genuine where the job calls for it.

The reason is straightforward: if a part fails, we need backup. A cheap component from an unknown supplier is fine right up until it isn’t, and then you’re the one paying for a job done twice.

Brakes on European vehicles

Worth knowing before you get a quote, because it catches people out. A brake job on most European vehicles means pads, rotors and wear sensors. The sensors are consumable and they’re part of the job, not an upsell.

We can very rarely machine European rotors — they’re generally made too thin to take it. We have an in-house brake machine for rotors and drums and we use it where it’s appropriate, which on a BMW usually isn’t. We’ll tell you when machining is the right call and when it isn’t.

Servicing to your vehicle, not a calendar

Long-interval servicing works better in theory than it does on New Zealand roads. Short trips, stop-start city running and dusty conditions all age oil faster than a long-interval schedule assumes — and as the VANOS work shows, oil condition on a BMW isn’t just about engine wear.

We set service reminders based on the condition of your vehicle and how you actually use it. More on European car servicing and repairs, and our blog covers how often to service your European car in New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does BMW servicing cost?

It depends on the model, the oil it takes and what the service includes. Give us your registration and we’ll give you an exact figure rather than a starting price that changes later.

Do you use genuine BMW parts?

Where the job requires them, yes, and we’ll tell you when it does. Otherwise we fit quality aftermarket parts from suppliers we know stand behind them.

My BMW is leaking oil. Is it serious?

It depends where from and how fast. Bring it in and we’ll find the source rather than guess — oil leaks get worse and cost more the longer they run.

Can you do coding on my BMW?

Often, yes, though it depends on the vehicle and the job. Some we do in-house and some goes to a programming specialist we work with. Tell us what you need and we’ll confirm before you commit.

Do you register batteries?

Yes, as standard. A new battery that isn’t registered to the vehicle won’t last as long as it should.

Will servicing outside BMW affect my warranty?

No. Provided the service is carried out to manufacturer specification with parts and fluids that meet it, and documented properly, your factory warranty is unaffected. Your rights are also covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act.
